The Written Communication Ability Of Table And Chair Setting Problem Solution For Mathematics Education Students

Abstract

This qualitative descriptive research aims at analyzing the written communication ability of Mathematics Education students in solving chair and table setting problem. The subjects of this research are 10 students of Mathematics Education Study Program of two university. The instrument of data collection is 2 essay questions about table and chair setting. The technique of data analysis of this research uses the triangulation technique. The result of this research is that there are 8 principles in written communication such completeness; conciseness; consideration; concreteness; clarity; correctness; simplicity; & naturalness. There are 3 groups of students namely students who represented their answer using pictures, the students who represented their answer using mathematical symbols and the students who represented their answer using explanation. According to the answer of the three groups of students, there were only simplicity and naturalness principle which were fulfilled by all subjects. The group which represented the answer using pictures fulfilled the correctness principle but not conciseness as well as concreteness. As for the group which represented the answer using mathematical symbols, not all students fulfilled the clarity and concertness principle. Similarly, for the group which represented the answer using explanation, not all students fulfilled concreteness, clarity, correctness principle.
